2019 Lungarotti Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG
2019 Lungarotti Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG
A red wine with great richness in polyphenols. Deep and intense purple-red colour with a complex bouquet of red fruits, marasca cherry, currant and raspberry, as well as delicate notes of sweet tobacco and cocoa, finishing off with hints of officinal herbs. The structure is dense with rich but harmonious tannins and wonderful complexity; the fruitiness is sustained by fresh acidity and the finish is long-lasting.
100% Sagrantino obtained from massal selection and harvested in October. Stainless steel fermentation with skin maceration for 28 days. Wood aging for 12 months in barrique. Light filtering and 18-20 months in bottle before release.
Sagrantino is one of Italy’s oldest native varietals with characteristic polyphenolic complexity: a wild horse that must be discovered and tamed with the proper viticultural techniques in order to speak the harmonious and balanced language of all the Lungarotti wines. Legend has it that the name Sagrantino was given by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia; while travelling to Castel del Monte, he stopped to hunt with his falcon in the area around Montefalco. The bird, a specimen of of the prized and rare species called Saccr, fell sick and was cured with a medicine based on the local wine, which from that moment onwards, was called Sagrantino, after the name of the Emperor’s falcon. The DOC appellation was granted to Montefalco in 1979 also thanks to the contribution of Giorgio Lungarotti.
